Early Literacy

The Haston Library is a proud participant in the reading program “1000 Books Before Kindergarten.”

What is this program? Parents set a goal to read 1000 books before their child starts Kindergarten. It’s not as impossible as it might seem. If you read one book to your child every day, it will take you just under three years to read one thousand books.

If you read three books a day, it will take just under one year!

Parents and children ages 0-4 are invited to participate.

Babies and young children learn language through social literacy experiences – parents interacting with them using books. A study of  3- to 5-year-olds who had been read to at least three times per week found the children:

  • Two times more likely to recognize all letters.
  • Two times more likely to have word-sight recognition.
  • Two times more likely to understand words in context
